Program Spotlight:  The Senior Law Project

The Senior Law Project (SLP) provides free legal services to Nevadans 60 years and older.  The SLP is the only program of its kind that serves older adults in the entire state of Nevada.  The staff attorneys of the project provide a wide range of legal assistance depending on the individuals’ needs.  The services offered through the SLP include counsel and advice, brief service to resolve a specific issue, preparation of legal documents, representation in court, among other things.  Although our attorneys are prepared to tackle a wide range of legal issues, estate planning including advance directives are the hot topics most seniors want to discuss.  The SLP services wouldn’t be possible without the funding from the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), the Nevada Bar Foundation, Aging and Disabilities Services’ Division of Nevada (ADSD), District Court filing fees and donations from clients and the community at large.

In addition to meeting with potential clients in person at each of the four Nevada Legal Services offices in Northern Nevada – Reno, Yerington, Carson City, and Elko – the SLP staff attorneys bring their knowledge to seniors in rural settings.   These regularly scheduled clinics take place at a senior or community center.  The consultations are approximately 60 minutes in duration and are scheduled one or two months in advance.  Currently, LSC and Nevada Bar Foundation funds are used to serve the residents of Lyon, Churchill, and Pershing counties.  The visits to each county are as follows:

Lyon County:

  • Fernley:  the first Tuesday of every EVEN month
  • Silver Springs:  the third Tuesday of every month
  • Dayton: the fourth Wednesday of every month

Churchill County:

  • Fallon:  the second Tuesday of every month

Pershing County:

  • Lovelock:  the first Tuesday of every ODD month

Pre-registration and the completion of an intake are the only requirements that must be satisfied prior to meeting with an attorney.  Sign-ups are handled by each senior or community center on a first come, first served basis.

Y para nuestros amigos de la tercera edad que hablan español, consultas en su idioma están disponibles para su conveniencia.

We look forward to serving you.
