Staff Attorney – HIV/AIDS Rights
For 40 years Nevada Legal Services (NLS) has strengthened communities across Nevada by ensuring fairness and providing equal access to justice. We are a non-profit legal aid organization providing free legal services to low income people in every county in Nevada. Our primary source of funding is through a grant from the federal Legal Services Corporation.
Nevada Legal Services is currently seeking a Staff Attorney to work in our Reno office. The Staff Attorney will be responsible for delivering direct legal assistance and providing legal education to low-income Nevadans living with HIV/AIDS. This position will handle a wide variety of civil legal matters, including but not limited to landlord-tenant issues, estate planning, individual rights issues, social security and other public benefits, and limited family law. Nevada Legal Services is looking for an innovative self-starter who is excited to get into the community and can engage many different stakeholders to develop and maintain a Medical-Legal Partnership and other professional relationships. Some travel and overnight stays will be required.
Requirements:
• Licensed to practice in Nevada or in another state and eligible for admission pursuant to Supreme Court Rule 49.1(1)(c).
• J.D. from ABA accredited law school.
• Applicant must have a strong interest in LGBTQ+ rights, and/or disability law is also highly desirable. Individuals personally impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic are strongly encouraged to apply.
• Excellent communication skills and experience addressing a variety of audiences. • One to two years of experience in public interest law preferred.
• Capability to work with low-income clients from diverse backgrounds and clients with limited English proficiency.
Compensation and Benefits:
DOE the Staff Attorneys’ starting salary is $50,000 – $68,000. Nevada Legal Services offers an excellent paid health insurance and paid leave package. This is a full-time position requiring 34 hours per week.
