Nevada Legal Services Announces New Executive Director
Alex Cherup to lead Nevada’s statewide civil legal aid organization
Las Vegas, NV – The Nevada Legal Services (NLS) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the selection of Alex Cherup to serve as the organization’s Executive Director.
Cherup first joined NLS in 2019 as a Staff Attorney based in Reno, Nevada, representing clients in eviction defense, criminal record sealing, guardianship, and tribal law matters. Since that time, he has held a variety of leadership roles with the organization and most recently took the helm as Interim Executive Director starting in January 2024.
NLS is Nevada’s only statewide legal aid organization providing free civil legal help to vulnerable residents in all 17 counties.
NLS Board Chairperson Gregg Kamer said:
“After conducting a national search, we were thrilled to find that the best candidate was already on our team. Alex has shown a true commitment and passion for serving the community, and I am confident he will continue to advance NLS’s mission to provide access to justice for low-income Nevadans.”
A graduate of Northeastern University School of Law, Cherup demonstrates a focus on community-based lawyering and public interest law, recognizing the importance of innovation, creativity, and collaboration.
Prior to joining NLS, Cherup worked as a Public Defender in Lea County, New Mexico, and as the Director of Transition Services for Nevada PEP, our state’s Parent Training and Information Center. His organizational affiliations include his past service on the Executive Committee and as Vice President of the NAACP Las Vegas Branch, and as a longtime board member of the Nevada Advocacy Disability and Law Center. Additionally, Cherup has worked closely with the development of guardianship law reform, both as counsel for Protected Persons and in the practice and theory of alternatives to guardianship, like Supported Decision Making.
Cherup’s work at NLS continues his commitment to advocate for Dr. Martin Luther King’s vision of the “Beloved Community” and the essential need to shift from a “thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society.”
NLS Executive Director Alex Cherup said:
“I am honored for the opportunity to lead a statewide organization with a mission fundamentally focused on access to justice for all Nevadans. I am eager to support our team of exceptional advocates, devoted Board Members, generous funders and community partners in the delivery of meaningful and quality legal services.”
