Veterans Project
Nevada Legal Services takes great pride in assisting our veterans. What some may not know is that six years ago the Veterans Project was rolled out in collaboration with HELP USA and their Veteran Service Project. NLS staff work in collaboration with HELP USA and the VA to provide referrals to NLS staff that can assist veterans with a variety of legal issues. NLS staff also, before COVID, visited the VA on a regular basis to provide information on our programs and projects to interested veterans.
With the Veterans Project running full force, shortly after that the Nevada Attorney General’s Office of Military Legal Assistance wanted to join forces with NLS to collaborate with their series of veteran events known as the @EASE Program. NLS Attorneys provided Deputy Attorney Generals training on basic estate planning (wills, powers of attorney, medical powers of attorney) to provide veterans with wills at the events. Over the years these events have become more and more popular with veterans in rural communities. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic these face to face events and outreach efforts stopped.
NLS has continued with weekly Ask-A-Lawyer events by phone since the COVID shutdowns. The event provides services on Housing and Landlord Tenant issues, Debt Collection, Small Claims, Unemployment denials. Guardianship. Minor Estate Planning/Power of Attorneys, Bankruptcy, and Criminal Record Sealing.
